Dash-n-Smash! Super-Fast Holiday Hair

With Joico Artistic Educator, Mai Hernandez

Want a fun and flirty holiday hairstyle that you can pull together when the clock is ticking? Try this super-easy wavy ‘do from Joico Artistic Educator, Mai Hernandez: It’s a little more chill than full-on curls; more finished than beachy waves — but still makes a splash. “This is a fun, quick style for any occasion…but especially for the holiday season, when time is running short,” she explains of her textured look. “It’s a combination of beach waves and ripple waves, with the ends left straight for a better finish.”

A few things to know…

Who can wear it: This looks works for any hair length, but is absolute perfection on shoulder-length and shorter.

Understand the lingo: Beach waves are when you create a traditional curl (and then twist and smooth over it with a flat iron to release some of the “perfection”). Ripple curls are created by moving your iron down the hair shaft, alternating between forward and backward motions.

Spray with restraint: Minimal product (and the right product) is key here.

And speaking of: Mai reaches for Joico Beach Shake Texturizing Finisher. “It gives texture and definition without crunching hair up,” she explains.

Start with clean hair: Day 2 and 3 hair is often the rule for textured looks…but Mai says a fresh “canvas” provides best results for this one.

Choose the right tool: Mai uses a 1” flat iron to achieve these waves; but says it could also be done with a 1 ¼” traditional curling iron.

Not too hot, not too cool: Set your tool at a medium-heat temperature; Mai recommends around 390°. (A bit lower, if hair is fragile or compromised.)

Holiday waves: The step-by-steps…

→ Wash hair with K-PAK Color Therapy Color-Protecting Shampoo and Conditioner.

→ Apply your prep – Mai loves K-PAK Color Therapy Luster Lock Multi-Perfector Spray to shield hair from any heat damage and provide tremendous shine to the finished look.

→ Blow-dry hair straight.

→ Clip top sections of hair out of the way.

→ Using a 1”-inch flat iron, create beachy waves in the front, directing them away from the face. (On shorter lengths, leave hair in the back straight; on medium-to-long lengths, continue creating beach waves all the way around.)

→ Now release your top “sub sections,” alternating between ripple waves and beach waves; each about 2 inches wide. Let waves cool thoroughly.

→ Apply Beach Shake all over.

→ Run fingers through hair to break up the waves.
